I painted this work after being moved by the way the afternoon light caught the boulders on a Sydney coastal walk, transforming them into almost fiery red rocks. It was such a stark contrast to the deeply shaded path.
The brilliant colourist Matisse once observed: “Color attains its full expression only when it is organised, when it is put into relation with its opposite.” I couldn’t agree more.
Orange and blue are complementary opposites.
In this work, I have set them off against each other, illuminating the canvas and bringing to life the memory of that walk.
