Power of colour
It’s no secret. Colour is a natural mood booster, a ‘creative’ stimulant (the best kind). Think dopamine dressing. Colour has a remarkable influence on our emotions and well-being. Colourful environments have been found to enhance productivity and spark innovation. That’s why I choose to surround myself with colour. So why not embrace the Power of colour, and wear that colourful kimono, canary yellow bikini, or brilliant blue clutch. Celebrate art and living with Jessica Art and Design.
Live artfully. Live colourfully.
About Jessica
Jessica Sutherland is a Sydney based artist and creative.
She began her professional life in law, working in large corporate law firms in Sydney and New York. But beneath the surface, there was always a burning creative energy. A self-taught artist, Jessica followed her instinctive pull toward colour and texture —and after a chance encounter with Ken Done at a law event in 2023, swapped her legal practice for art.
Drawn to the emotional power of colour and the way it can stir memory, mood, and meaning, Jessica’s work pulses with a quiet energy. Her paintings explore the language of colour as a form of expression—abstract, intuitive, and deeply personal. Jessica finds creative kinship with the abstract expressionists, while also taking cues from contemporary illustrators and graphic artists like Kindah Khalidy and Stephen Ormandy, whose joyful use of colour and form echo in some of her own practice. Jessica is not limited in what she creates, her vision is to bring Joy through Art. Her colourful designs are now on everything from footballs to ski gaiters - and she is just beginning.
Inspired by traditional textiles, craftsmanship and folk art, she often weaves fabric, pattern and layering into her compositions, nodding to the intricacy of woven forms and the rich tactility and emotive power of embroidered work. In her Tapestry series, which celebrates the chaotic beauty and unfolding nature of life, she incorporates vintage fabrics and embellished trims, some in a state of disrepair and unravelling, always against a backdrop of bold and modern colour. These works tell a story of new and old, with every stroke and every fragment carefully curated.
Growing up in Australia beside the water has an affect on people. Jessica’s ‘Reef’ series is a celebration of the sea’s beauty, rhythms, colours, and fragility - offering a vibrant tribute to underwater worlds through a lens of layering and abstraction. Her semi-abstract works invite you to become immersed in these imagined underwater worlds. Her paintings while vibrant, on closer inspection reveal subtle details and layering, encouraging viewers to take time to reflect on these fragile spaces.
Based in Sydney, Australia, Jessica paints from her studio in Northbridge. Her art and designs are instinctive, drawing viewers into a sensory experience - one that encourages them to feel, rather than interpret; to absorb, rather than explain.
“Creativity is a superpower, use it for good.”
“I’m often asked ‘what is your favourite colour?’ I enjoy working with all colours even the dull ones. I get a buzz out of mixing colours, pairing bright colours like neon pink with muted tones like yellow ochre. I love creating harmony on a canvas by bringing two disparate colours together. When I look at a canvas and the colours sing - that’s when I know I’ve created something beautiful” - Jessica
